What role do thermistors and KTY sensors play in the motor?
One of the most important operating parameters of electric and geared motor operation is the temperature of the motor windings.
Motor heating is caused by mechanical, electrical and copper losses, as well as heat transfer to the motor from the external environment (including ambient temperature and surrounding equipment).
If the temperature of the motor windings exceeds the maximum rated temperature, the windings may be damaged or the motor insulation may be damaged or even fail completely.
This is why most electric motors and geared motors (especially those used in motion control applications) have thermistor or silicon resistance sensors (also known as KTY sensors) integrated into the motor windings.
These sensors directly monitor the winding temperature (rather than relying on current measurements) and are used in conjunction with protection circuitry to prevent damage due to excessive temperature.
